Epilepsie (von epílēpsis ἐπίληψις Angriff, Überfall) bezeichnet eine Erkrankung mit spontan auftretenden Krampfanfällen, die nicht durch eine aktuell bestehende, erkennbare Ursache (beispielsweise eine akute Entzündung des Gehirns, einen Schlaganfall oder eine Kopfverletzung) oder einen Auslöser (wie Entzug von Alkohol bei bestehender Alkoholabhängigkeit, Drogen oder massiven Schlafmangel) hervorgerufen wurden. Der Begriff ist seit dem 16. Jahrhundert nachweisbar.[1]
